I did not resist
The beast was underfed,
its ribs were showing
for years it hadn't a good bone to gnaw.
In tight, tight circles
it walked around its leash.
For a long time I watched it pacing,
watched it starving,
until one day I had enough.
Had enough of its howling,
had enough of its presence
beyond my kitchen window.
I went out with a knife
and I cut the leash.
The beast stared at me
from sunken sockets.
Then it lunged at me
and sank its teeth in my throat.
I didn't resist as it devoured me.
Didn't scream or kick.
Let its first meal be me.
Me who had leashed it for all those years.
Me who had let it starve.
Its fur grew thick and glossy
with every bite,
its flanks filled out, with every crack of bone.
Its eyes became sharp again.
And it tore through me painfully
and I did not resist,
nor screamed.
As it was done devouring all of me
I was no more.
