Made to look at
Weighed down by humanity
I notice what
wasn't made for me to look at.
And yet I look.
I am witness
as the streetlight springs on in the dusk.
The bat circles the moth,
the runner sets out in the evening light,
the birds return home, weightlessly.
Orange glow of the streetlights,
church spires over the clubs.
Advertisements stare at me.
Someone made those images,
someone hung up the poster.
Where trees and houses tower alike,
if we sink into prayer before them.
The parks are full of woodsmoke and laughter
the windows little rectangles in the dark.
This is the 162840th time I saw
a beautiful pink sky.
I stop to gaze at it.
Above me the pale moon hangs and I notice.
It has been noticed by everyone that ever was.
Some of these stars are long dead,
as the bat finally catches the moth.
It wasn't made for us to look at
and yet I feel it was.
